Reynolds v Outcasts C.C.

Thursday 3rd May 2018

Ashley Cricket Ground

Outcasts 79-9 off 20 overs

Reynolds 84-5 off 15.3 overs

Reynolds won by 5 wickets

Outcasts journeyed to Ashley on the 3rd May to take on old foes Reynolds in their second scheduled game of the new cricket season, the first match the previous week having been called off due to a waterlogged ground.  David Walsh had had to cry off at short notice, and Outcasts were grateful to Brian Whitworth for stepping in to make up the starting 11.  Outcasts batted first in overcast and rather chilly conditions for the time of year, with Derek Molyneux and Andy Broadhurst striding out to take the opening balls of the new season.

Sadly, Outcasts' batting frailties, all too evident last year, once again tarnished their performance.  Against tight bowling from both ends, and with the ball swinging through the air and moving off the pitch, only Steve Potter, going in at first wicket down, and Chris Truesdale, adding important runs at the end of the innings, managed to get into double figures.  Steve was the star.  Having reached the compulsory 25 runs retirement figure, he returned on the fall of the 9th wicket to go on for an undefeated 32.   Chris T. ably assisted with a combative 19 not out.  M. Higgs was the pick of the home team's bowlers with 3 wickets for 16 runs off his 4 overs, and he was well backed up by Nichols (2 for 12) and C. Higgs and Horn (one wicket apiece).   Outcasts' final total of 79-9 off their 20 overs was never likely to be enough given the big hitters to come at the top of Reynolds' batting order.

And so it proved.  Despite some tight Outcasts' bowling, Cunningham and M. Higgs were able to profit from the sound start afforded by Reynolds' openers, and the hosts knocked off the runs with 4.3 overs to spare for the loss of  5 wickets.  The match ended in Stygian gloom (thanks for that, Ted), with neither batsmen nor fielders able to see the red ball clearly in fast fading light.  Is there a case for using a white ball in future Outcasts' matches?   Despite the defeat, Outcasts' bowlers acquitted themselves well, with Chris Truesdale and Paul Lucas taking 2 wickets each, Paul Mooney recording 1 for 11 off 4 overs, and Les conceding a miserly 5 runs off his two overs.

Outcasts go to Oughtrington on the 9th May hoping for better fortune against Lymm.
