A Game of Two Pies

Bowden Vale C.C. Over 40’s (Vale Vikings) v Outcasts C.C.

29th August 2018.

Played at Bowden Vale C.C.

Outcasts 83 for 7

Vikings 84 for 4

Vikings won by 6 wickets.

This fixture was an added bonus to what seemed a short fixture list for Outcasts this season. Bowden Vale C.C. are excellent hosts and the match was played under friendly conditions.

Outcasts had to call upon a couple of experienced players from TSCC, Chris Costa and Callum Livingstone – both quality all-rounders, but the absence of many regulars meant that we only had 9 players on the field. Vikings kindly rotated a substitute fielder for us.

Jon Gibson opened our innings partnered by Chris Costa and he immediately looked to attack. Runs were difficult to come by however on a green wicket as the bowling was pretty accurate. He eventually succumbed looking for an expansive drive which brought in our other guest Callum Livingstone. He opened his account with a well-timed drive for our first boundary, but was unlucky to find the mid-off fielder at regular intervals with some lovely straight drives without reward. The TSCC pair looked to rotate with some quick singles and put pressure on, but a change of bowler from the western end made a breakthrough. It has to be said that Crowson had an action that seemed as bizarre as his cap which remained on his head throughout. Bowling left arm over he had no leading right arm (it stayed perfectly down by his side) and his delivery arm was in the perpendicular from beginning to end of his action. Notwithstanding, he managed to produce enormous in-swinging deliveries to the right handers and was by and large right on the money. It was good enough to do for Callum who got a bottom edge to the keeper. Steve Potter joined Chris Costa and the pair got the rate up with some well-timed strokes, Steve with his trademark cuts and Chris with a few lusty blows to dispatch the ball over the ropes. Chris fell on 29 looking for his third maximum that would have seen him retire at the agreed 30 runs, which brought in the skipper. But, with the sun now setting right over the bowlers arm and Crowson’s big in-swingers, he had a rare failure without troubling the scorer. Jeff Stanton didn’t fare much better and with the final overs closing in, Paul Mooney and Steve looked for every opportunity to score. Steve was eventually run out from a direct hit as he too approached his retirement score and it was left to Paul and yours truly to see off the last couple of balls of the innings. Vikings bowled really well though their fielding wasn’t put under too much pressure. A score of 83 was never going to be enough. Bizarrely, it appears from the score book we ended the last over two balls short as Paul was caught in the covers. I guess the umpire didn’t account for the two wides he gave, though I doubt another two deliveries would have made any difference.

The setting sun really did have a detrimental effect in the early reply from the Vikings. Andy B behind the stumps had no chance of seeing the ball, as neither the batters, and at one point we bowled a couple of consecutive overs from the eastern end rather than halting the game for 10 minutes. Vikings opener and skipper, Jordan, scored freely with the majority of his shots to the leg side and he reached his retirement of 30 in an opening partnership of 37. Jeff Stanton replaced Livingstone and with his second over brought us right back in the game with a double wicket maiden – both wickets pouched by Livingstone at extra cover – the first a straightforward catch, the second a spectacular dive to his right at shoulder height which was worthy of any champagne moment. So when the score was 38 for 2 at the half way stage became 39 for 3 and 1 retirement, we started to believe when Paul M bowled D Paul in the tenth – Jeff taking a third wicket with the final delivery of his third over and the score had only moved on to 49. However, it wasn’t to be as M Dean in at 6 had too much class who cruised to an undefeated 29 as their total score reached the target with a bye and 10 balls to spare. We gave it our best shot, but yet again an inability to accumulate runs and set a decent target emphasises Outcasts downfall.

And so the 2018 season came to a close as we were treated to a very fine supper by our hosts – assorted hot pies, mashed potatoes, mushy peas and gravy or baked beans and rounded off with a selection of cakes and doughnuts. It has to be said that on this occasion I wasn’t the only one who had two pies – and some went the whole distance and had second helpings of the mash and peas too, not to mention the doughnuts. You know who you are!

Warm thanks once again to the hospitality of Bowden Vale C.C.

Man of the match would be difficult to choose from Chris Costa or Steve Potter for their batting, or to Jeff for his 3 wickets. The champagne moment for me was a piece of athletic fielding by Callum Livingstone when sliding at speed on the boundary to save 3 runs – a moment of madness to my mind, or perhaps his spectacular diving catch to dismiss S. Bottomley who must have been dismayed to see a very fine cover drive grabbed in mid-air.

Let the 2018/19 social season begin – in fact on Friday 31st August for the annual golf day and the Keith Ambrey Trophy.
