Outcasts v Rammy Dads

At Winton Cricket Club

Tuesday 14th May 2019

Rammy Dads 137-6

Outcasts 114-5

Rammy Dads won by 23 runs

Outcasts returned to Winton for their first home game of the new season, having lost their first encounter at Lymm, and having had the scheduled match against Reynolds at Ashley called off because of inclement weather. We were all suitably impressed by the changes that had taken place at the well-appointed ground at Alder Forest, where Winton C.C. had invested heavily during the close season on refurbishing the changing rooms, relocating the nets, and providing new display cabinets in the bar area for club trophies.

The weather was fine and sunny when the Dads won the toss and elected to bat.

Raj To The Rescue

Outcasts had been struggling to get a team together and were badly missing the likes of Paul "Raging Bull" Mooney who had moved to Dorset to set up a new business with Geraldine; Scott Broadhurst who had gone to a new job in the West Country; and Derek Molyneux who had retired from cricket. At one stage they only had seven players but Raj came to the rescue by persuading a couple of his mates - Pavan and Rakesh - to turn out for the team for the first time. Outcasts finally took to the field with ten men, with stalwart Ron Truesdale coming out of retirement to help his old mates out, and the Dads generously loaning them one of their own.

Dads Pile On The Agony
Farnell and Nally opened for the Dads and it soon became clear that Outcasts would have their work cut out to keep the score to manageable limits. The pair had put on 33 in under 5 overs before Nally was bowled by Raj for 12. The Dads had their own 'retire at 25' rule, and , Wilkinson and Baynes all made full use of it. The visitors had put on 102 in just over 11 overs before the second wicket fell, Oldfield falling to the returning Ron for 2. With a scoring rate of just shy of ten an over it appeared that Outcasts would have a mountain to climb when it was their turn to bat. But tight bowling in the second half of the Dads innings saw wickets for Stuart Craigen, Chris Truesdale, new boy Pavan, and Jeff Stanton, and the Dads closed on 137 for 6, much less than at one stage seemed likely. Stuart, Chris and Jeff all returned creditable figures off their two overs each. Unusually, all six Dads' dismissals were clean bowled.

Jeff And Rakesh Sparkle In Outcasts' Reply

Outcasts needed to be going at more than a run a ball to keep up with the scoring rate, and openers Jeff and Rakesh did their very best to keep the home side in the game. Both reached the 25 retirement target which the hosts had also adopted, and with 62 runs on the board after 9 overs the Outcasts were in with a shout. But Pavan, Les, Stuart, Andy and Raj all fell in quick succession for single figures. At 88-5 off sixteen overs the game was up for Outcasts, although David Walsh and Chris Truesdale offered lower order resistance and gave an air of respectability to the final total of 114-5. In the end the Dads ran out fairly comfortable winners by 23 runs, but the Outcasts took heart from their refusal to cave in, and from the valuable contributions of newcomers Pavan and Rakesh. We hope to see more of them.

After the match both teams enjoyed beer and pizzas in the club house.

Outcasts MOTM: Jeff for his undefeated 25 runs and 6-1 bowling figures.

Next Up, Traders

Next up for the Outcasts are Rammy Traders at Winton on the 21st May when we hope to renew acquaintances with one or two familiar faces.
