New Boys Shine, But Cairns' Hat-Trick Blitzes Outcasts

Outcasts v Rammy Traders

At Winton Cricket Club

Tuesday 21st May 2019

Outcasts 94-7 off 20 overs

Rammy Dads 97-2 off 18.4 overs

Rammy Traders won by 8 wickets

Outcasts played their third competitive game of the season and the second at their Winton ground on Tuesday 21st May on a gloriously sunny evening where the visitors were Rammy Traders. The home team batted first with Stuart Craigen and new boy Rakesh opening for the hosts. Sadly, Stuart was an early casualty, bowled in the first over by Woolley without troubling the scorer. Rakesh was joined at the crease by captain Chris but he, too, departed in the 6th over, bowled by Bowen for 7. This brought Steve Potter to the wicket to partner Rakesh, and the pair set about building Outcasts' innings. The two made steady progress before both retired after having reached the 25 maximum. David Walsh came and went in quick time, bringing another of Outcasts' new faces, Pavan, to the middle, but at 76-3 off 15 overs the home side were struggling to set a competitive target.

Their cause wasn't helped by an outstanding piece of bowling from Cairns for the Traders, who took a hat-trick of wickets with the score on 89. Raj, Julian and Les all fell to consecutive deliveries, all clean bowled. Outcasts' final total of 94-7 was always going to be difficult to defend. Rakesh, Steve Potter and Pavan all acquitted themselves well with the bat, while, inevitably, Cairns was the pick of the Traders bowlers, with figures of 3 wickets for 4 runs off two overs.

In the event, Outcasts made the Traders fight every inch of the way. The opening bowlers kept a tight grip on the scoring rate and after 11 overs the visitors were 46-2 and still behind the asking rate. Opener Jack had been bowled by Raj for 1, and Richard followed, neatly stumped by Andy for 14 off Chris's bowling. But Jools, Simon and John steadied the ship, and the Traders reached their target with 1.2 overs to spare and with only two wickets down.

After the match both teams enjoyed a beer and a pizza in the Winton club house.

Next up for Outcasts is their annual trip to Bakewell where they will face old friends and foes the Peak Park Planners.

MOTM: Newcomers Rakesh and Pavan again acquitted themselves well with both bat and ball, and were in contention for the coveted MOTM award. But for his agile and athletic display behind the stumps the view from the terraces was that the award on this occasion should go to Andy Broadhurst.
