OUTCASTS UNDONE BY SPIN DEMON NICHOLS

Reynolds V Outcasts C.C.

11th May, 2017 at Ashley C.C.

Reynolds won by 15 runs.

Our traditional early season away fixture against our old friends Reynolds CC saw another sunny and bright evening with a very dry pitch and outfield. Chris won the toss and asked Reynolds to bat first. The Outcasts’ opening attack consisted of Les Cooper and Kyran Noone, and both bowlers had early success with almost identical dismissals, both batmen getting a thin edge on to their stumps.

Scott and Chris took over bowling duties, and Scott bowled well with good pace and rhythm and bowled Higgs with the first ball of his second spell. Skipper Chris opted for his loopier style of bowling to good effect, and took the wicket of the hard-hitting Cunningham in his first over. Eric made a very welcome return to the side and was right back in the groove from the start. Reynolds were scoring steadily aided by a few fortunate edges that sped across the dry outfield for fours.

Dixon junior retired at 25, and Les and Kyran returned to the action, as left hander James Nichols for Reynolds accumulated some useful late runs to finish on 106 for 5. Les’s four overs went for a creditable 11 runs.

Steve Potter and Kyran opened the batting with Steve looking in very nice touch, and they put on 17 at a good rate before Kyran edged one onto his stumps. Tony Threlfall looked like he was about to get going but he was adjudged LBW against Cunningham. Nick Thompson and Ted didn’t hang around long, both falling to left handed spinner Nichols, and Andy Broadhurst joined Steve, who was still going strong. Steve had to retire after making a very stylish 25, but that wasn’t the end of his work for the evening.

Alick Cross was unluckily run out after slipping half way down the pitch going for a single. Andy was going well, but due to a leg injury, needed a runner, which brought Steve Potter back into the fray. When Andy had reached 21, he was bowled by Nichols, who was turning it square. Scott followed next ball, also bowled leaving Nichols on a hat trick at the end of the over. Possibly the first instance of father and son being dismissed off consecutive balls in Outcasts’ history?

Chris and Eric saw out the next over leaving Chris to face the hat-trick ball. He kept the ball out, but set off for a sharp single, and the irrepressible Nichols picked it up and flung down the stumps at the bowler’s end to run him out. A couple of balls later, Eric became Nichols’ fifth victim, again clean bowled, leaving him with the exceptional figures of 5 for 9. Steve Potter returned for the third time (another first?) and he and Les saw out the final stages finishing on 91 for 9 with Steve on 33 not out. So all in all, a pretty even match, with one player making the match winning difference.
