Outcasts Prevail Against Peak Park Planners

Peak Park Planners v Outcasts

Bakewell

29th May 2018

Peak Park 60-7 off 20 Overs

Outcasts 61-4 off 18.2 Overs

Outcasts won by 6 wickets with 10 balls to spare

Outcasts made their way through the Peak District on Tuesday, 29th May to take on one of their favourite opponents on one of their favourite grounds.  It was two years since they last journeyed to Bakewell, the 2017 fixture having had to be called off because the visitors were struggling to raise a team and because of an uncertain weather forecast.

Outcasts were short of one or two regulars on this occasion, too, with Andy B. being caught up in traffic and unable to get out of Bolton.  But the numbers were made up by one old face making a welcome guest appearance, Eric Shufflebotham, and two of Les's mates, Martin Spencer and Jim Lomas.

Swifts were swooping and screeching overhead, and mayflies dancing in droves over the trees by the riverside as Peak Park batted first.  And they were soon struggling as two wickets went down early as the two Pauls - Mooney and Lucas - removed the openers with only a couple of runs on the board.  Bradford and Cook steadied the ship for the hosts, but runs were hard to come by on a slowish pitch that showed variable bounce and in the face of tight bowling and fielding from the Outcasts.  Indeed, the visitors’ performance in the field was a huge improvement from the sloppy display the previous week at Winton.  Bradford was finally run out, and Cook bowled by Chris (entered into the score book as "Shrewsdale" by the Peak Park lads, to go along with "Collingwood" from an earlier game), and the Planners were on 50-4 with 16 overs gone.  Scoring was a real struggle, with all of Outcasts' bowlers finding a good line and length, giving the hosts little opportunity to free their arms.

Peak Park finished on 60-7 off their twenty overs, with only Bradford and Cook making it into double figures.  Chris and Les picked up a couple of wickets each for the Outcasts, including a two wicket maiden for Les.  What's all this talk of retirement?!  There were tidy contributions, too, from Paul Mooney, Paul Lucas, Chris, Eric and Jim.  Special mention should go to Martin behind the sticks, for his enthusiastic athleticism in keeping the number of byes down.  And Les Cooper would have qualified for a Champagne Moment had he been able to hang on to a quite tremendous diving catch attempt.

Set to score 61 to win off 20 overs, Outcasts were confident that even their brittle batting should be up to the task.  And so it proved, but not without a bit of a struggle.  David Walsh and Vij Raj got the innings off to a steady start, and there were 24 runs on the board before Vij was dismissed.  Ted joined David who eventually holed out for 23, just two runs short of the compulsory retirement target.  Ted and Eric then added a combined total of 18 before Jim and Chris saw the Outcasts over the line in the 19th over, with just 10 balls to spare.  The Peak Park lads had done a wonderful job in defending a low total and, although Outcasts always looked in charge, another couple of wickets for the hosts and the result would really have been in doubt.  All of the Peak Park bowlers returned respectable figures with Fullelove and Croney being the pick with two wickets apiece.  Cooke deserves a mention, too, for a very economical 6 runs conceded off his 4 overs.

After the match players from both teams retired to the Queens Arms for some liquid refreshments before the Outcasts made the return journey back over the moors to their homes in various parts of Greater Manchester.  Road works and diversions made it a long and tiring drive for some.   It looks as though next week's match against Economists may be in doubt, with Outcasts only able to raise half a dozen players for this fixture so far.  Watch this space.

MOTM: There were some fine performances, especially with the ball, but on this occasion David Walsh shades it for his 23 runs that established the platform for Outcasts' victory.  And a catch.
