Outcasts Tame Tigers in Heatwave

Outcasts CC v Totty Tigers

Winton Cricket Club

Tuesday 26th June

Outcasts 119-5 off 20 overs

Totty Tigers 96-6 off 20 overs

Outcasts won by 23 runs

Outcasts returned to their Winton home for only the second time this season when they entertained Totty Tigers, one of a number of teams from villages to the north of Bury in Greater Manchester. The weather was stiflingly hot as Chris won the toss and elected to bat. But there was some disappointment on the faces of some of the home team, who had been lead to believe that their opponents would be a team of girls. Several of them had had a shower and put on deodorant specially. David Walsh had had a shave! Clearly a case of crossed lines somewhere. As it turned out, the Tigers were a mixture of young guns and seasoned oldies, though they were missing several key players. But there was one female amongst their ranks at least!

David Walsh and Paul Mooney opened the batting for Outcasts and they made steady progress against a lively opening attack before David was out, caught by Campbell for 9, by which time the home team had 29 runs on the board. Chris joined Paul and another useful partnership developed before Paul finally departed for 15, also caught by Campbell, with the score on 62. Steve Potter now joined Chris in the middle and the two embarked on a most productive partnership. Chris was eventually out caught for 27 in an entertaining knock that included 3 boundaries. Steve fell, too, run out thanks to an excellent piece of fielding at short mid off, and Scott sacrificed himself in the chase for quick runs at the end of the innings, but Outcasts final total of 119 looked like one that was capable of being defended if the team bowled and fielded well. Steve Potter's innings was a little gem, containing 7 boundaries, many of them drives and cuts through the offside. Bowen was the pick of the Tigers' bowlers with 2 for 17 off three overs, but Gayden is worth a mention, too, for a very economical 5 runs conceded off three overs.

Hall and Campbell opened for the Tigers and they looked largely untroubled despite some tight bowling from Paul Lucas and Scotty who led the Outcasts' attack. They had put on 43 runs before Derek, coming on for Paul, clipped the top of Hall's bails. Campbell followed not long after, splendidly taken at point by David whose tumbling catch made up for a rather easier chance that had gone down earlier when the sun was in his eyes. He said. The top four Tigers all made respectable scores, but after 15 overs the visitors were 70-4 and needing to go at ten an over if they were to pass Outcasts' total. It proved too much, and their final score of 96-6 left them 23 runs short. Paul Mooney once more shone with the ball, taking 3 for 14, and Steve Potter chipped in with 2 for 12 to follow his excellent batting performance.

A special mention should go to the bar staff at Winton who kept the players of both sides well plied with water in sweltering conditions.

Next up for Outcasts is the Dorset tour, with matches on Saturday and Sunday against local opposition.

MOTM - Steve Potter for fine batting and bowling.

Champagne Moment: David Walsh for an outstanding diving catch to dismiss Campbell.
