Outcasts Pipped In Tameside Run-Fest

Broadbottom v Outcasts

At Broadbottom

Tuesday 16th July 2019

Outcasts 159-6 off 20 Overs

Broadbottom 164-5 off 19.3 Overs

Broadbottom won by 5 wickets with 3 balls to spare

With last year's fixture having been abandoned without a ball being bowled due to heavy and persistent drizzle, Outcasts journeyed to the picturesque village of Broadbottom in the Pennine foothills in anticipation of another high scoring game on this compact little ground. There was also eager anticipation for the after-match refreshments prepared by the good ladies of Broadbottom Cricket Club and which are noted far and wide for their variety and quality. Outcasts were not to be disappointed on either count.

Once more the visitors were indebted to another couple of newcomers - Amit and Siva - to make up a team whose line-up, including Sam Chambers and Bernard Hartley, bore very little resemblance to the side that turned out on a regular basis last season. With one or two men missing for the start of the game Outcasts opened the batting, and it soon became clear that we were in for another run-fest. Pavan and Raj, followed by Rakesh, set about the home bowling and 72 runs had come off the first seven overs, an unheard of scoring rate for the generally more conservative visitors. At that stage, and if the scoring rate could be maintained, Outcasts looked on course to smash their batting record of 162 set at Brooksbottom last year. Sadly, though, both openers had to retire having reached the compulsory 25 run maximum. Not to be outdone, their replacements, Chris and Rakesh continued to plunder the bowling. Anything short was being dispatched to the fence with the pair combining to hit nine boundaries.

Half way through their allotted 20 over Outcasts were 90-2, having now lost Rakesh and Julian, unfortunately dismissed first ball from a very sharply-taken catch. New boys Siva and Amit contributed a sprightly 8 and 12 respectively, and although Les and Bernard perished cheaply in the dash for runs towards the end of Outcasts' 20 overs, Sam added a valuable, undefeated 20 to take the final score to 159-6. Although this was a tad less than looked likely at one stage, it nevertheless represented Outcasts' 4th highest score in this form of limited overs cricket.

However, it soon became clear that the visitors would have it all on to defend their total as the first over for the hosts yielded a punishing 18 runs! At the top of the order Grant, Jason and Andy all cut loose with a steady stream of boundaries that took the wind out of Outcasts' sails. Dez, Mark and Deano came and went relatively cheaply and the visitors' hopes of bowling out the opposition were revived. But Bas (with two enormous sixes) and Chris N wrestled back control for the home side.

The writing already looked on the wall for Outcasts when, too late, Les was introduced to the attack. A wonderful spell of 2 wickets for 2 runs - both clean bowled, off his allotted two overs gave the away side a sniff of hope. But trying to defend 5 runs off the final six deliveries was always going to be problematic on a pitch that had yielded so many boundaries. And so it proved, with Broadbottom winning with three balls to spare. So from a promising position Outcasts finally came to grief, with too many byes and sloppy fielding costing them dearly. y weren't the only ones to lose the plot, either, with ace scorer Peter doing the same half way through the home side's innings - the first time in over 30 years this has happened! In mitigation the lack of signalling from
all the umpires for wides, no balls, byes and leg byes didn't help, not to mention several 5- and 7-ball overs.

After the match both sides were treated to a quite splendid supper that included pork and raisin tagine, baked potatoes, rice, assorted sandwiches, fruit flan, cakes, and fresh fruit salad. We'll be there again next year!

Next up for Outcasts is an away fixture against Rammy Traders, unusually on a Friday night - 26th July.

MOTM: No truly outstanding performances, although Pavan, Raj and Chris T all deserve honourable mention for knocks that saw them retiring undefeated; and Les's 2 for 2 at the death was mightily impressive, as well.

Champagne Moment: Not on this occasion.
