HOBBS PLAYS A CAPTAINíS KNOCK TO STEER OUTCASTS TO NARROW VICTORY

DORSET DINOSAURS V OUTCASTS CC Ė AT WINFRITH NEWBURGH CC SATURDAY 18 JUNE 2016

Our annual excursion to Dorset came a little earlier this year, and the first game took us to a new venue, Winfrith Newburgh CC, about half an hourís drive from our Puncknowle base.  The opponents were our old friends Dorset Dinosaurs led by Phil Sterling.  Phil does a great job of cobbling a team together for this fixture, and once again there was a sprinkling of familiar faces, mixed with some new Dinosaurs.  It was agreed to dispense with the toss, and Dinosaurs batted first.  There were two very significant milestones to mark, firstly Peter Taylorís 400th appearance for the club, the first ever to reach that landmark, and Steve Ramsdenís last ever match, having retired from regular cricket at the end of last season.  It was also club captain Les Cooperís tour debut.

Paul Chick opened the bowling, and almost held on to a sharp caught and bowled chance in the first over, but the Dinosaurs made clear their intentions to punish any loose bowling.  Ted Noone suffered in his first over, before knocking over the off stump of the dangerous looking Beaven in his second for a rapid 20.  Nicholson and Ellis then built a substantial stand of 94 runs, scoring at a good rate until they both retired having reached well deserved half centuries.  Les had slowed their progress somewhat with an excellent spell of 0 for 11 off 5 overs.

After the retirements, Outcasts managed to keep more of a lid on the scoring, with only 25 runs coming from the last 8 overs.  Roger and Eric claimed a wicket each, and Ant chipped in with two wickets as the Dinosaurs closed on 149 for 5.

After a welcome tea, the Outcasts began their innings in pursuit of 150 to win.  Openers were Paul Mooney, and Steve Ramsden, who was given a guard of honour by both teams as he made his way to the crease for the final time.  Unusually, Dinosaursí opening bowler was a loopy leg-spinner by the name of Chris Rabjohns.  Paul assessed the situation carefully, before planting the second ball of the innings just in front of the pavilion for six.  Steve played a couple of lovely shots and after two overs, the Outcasts reply was looking good at 15 without loss.

But in the third over, Rabjohnsí guile had first Paul and then Steve caught for a double wicket maiden.  Worse was to come when Eric was caught and bowled by Rabjohns.  As Colin prepared to stride to the wicket, skipper Ant assured him that the situation was tailor-made for him to stick around and build an innings, as he often has done in the longer tour matches.  Unfortunately, he uncharacteristically lofted a ball from Rees straight to the busy Rabjohns to leave the score on a sorry looking 20 for 4.  Roger and Ant proceeded to rebuild the innings, with Roger looking in silky form, especially with his trademark sweep, and Ant getting into his stride, despite not having played since last yearís tour.

In the 18th over, Roger was bowled by Nicholson for a valuable 29, and Ted joined Ant with the score on 82 for 5.  This pair kept up with the required rate, with Ant providing the fireworks, and Ted rotating the strike until Ant had to retire having reached a fine 50.  Les came to the wicket but was caught and bowled early on for1 trying to push the score along.  Dave Buckle scored 3 before coming down the track to the returning Rabjohns and getting stumped.  Paul Chick also perished, bowled by Stanley before Rabjohns bowled Peter with the score on 134 in the 29th over, Outcasts needed 16 to win from 10 balls.

Dinosaurs may have regretted their bowling success, as this brought Ant back out of retirement.  He immediately hit a six, which was followed by three singles, leaving 7 to win from the final over.  The tension was relieved when Ant smashed the second ball for 6 to tie the scores.  The next ball went through the keeper for 4 byes to bring the first Outcasts win of the season.  Ant finished unbeaten on 67 with Ted on 20 not out.

In the after-match presentations, Peterís 400th appearance, and Steveís final match were acknowledged, and Rabjohnsí excellent 5 for 31  and the Dinosaursí two half centuries highlighted, but there was only one real contender for the Bridehead Trophy, Ant Hobbs for his match winning innings and 2 wickets for 11 with the ball.
