Another new venue and another new
team for Outcasts resulted in a familiar pattern with Outcasts batting
frailties once again being exposed. Having said that we welcomed Jeff Stanton
into the fold making his Outcasts debut having been pursued from our friends
Swinton Lions and as we know he can wield the willow to great effect. He didn’t
disappoint and neither did Scott Broadhurst and David Walsh who each scored
freely to put some momentum into an opening attack, but once they had departed,
Jeff and Scott both having the retirement ruled enforced and David looking to
score boundaries, the old problems returned and scoring became all too static
though not for the want of trying. Running between the wickets at times was not
without its moments of risk but this is what happens when pressure is on the batsmen
who become frustrated at being unable to get the ball past fielders.
Rammy dads for their part were a
very friendly and accommodating mix of youth, experience and enthusiastic
cricketers and hopefully this will be the first of further fixtures in the
future. Their batting proved too strong in reply, with Outcasts using a variety
of bowlers to try to get wickets. With only Paul and Jeff managing a
breakthrough the result was never in much doubt. The Dads were too strong on
this occasion and were comfortable winners with overs to spare. Nevertheless,
it was a good fixture and the hospitalities provided by Tottington St. Johns
C.C. and after-match pizzas took away some of the disappointment of defeat in
the usual manner.
