Better Batting, But Outcasts Pipped Again

Outcasts Cricket Club journeyed west on Wednesday 24th August to meet a team from Warrington Borough Council at Widnes Cricket Club on a warm and sunny evening. The start was delayed until a match involving two teams of schoolboys was completed, at which point Outcasts took first innings on a sloping pitch. And they set off like a house on fire, with 40 runs on the board after the first 5 overs! Thereafter, Warrington bowlers reined... them in a bit, but an eventual total of 107 off 20 overs meant that, for once, Outcasts had posted a respectable target. Jeff Stanton and son Ethan once again starred with the bat, both retiring undefeated on 25.

However, if Outcasts had started their innings well, Warrington came out of the traps with all guns blazing and were going at over 10 runs an over for the first 6 overs. Fighting their way back into the game was always going to be a difficult proposition for Outcasts but, in fading light, they squeezed the play and cut down the flow of runs. Chris Truesdale took 3 quick wickets and skipper Les bowled a maiden off the 19th over - a phenomenal achievement under the circumstances. But a target of 107, good by Outcasts standards this summer, proved to be just that few too short, and Warrington knocked off the runs with 5 balls to spare.

After the game both sides enjoyed a buffet supper in the splendid surroundings of Widnes CC pavilion. The return fixture at Winton comes up in early September. Hope it's as good as this one.
