New Look Outcasts But Same Old Failings

Albion v Outcasts
At Astley Bridge
Wednesday 21st June 2017

Albion won by 3 wickets with two overs to spare

It was a new look Outcasts that journeyed to Astley Bridge on the summer solstice to take on old friends and rivals Albion on a humid evening that threatened, but never quite delivered, a thunder storm. In addition to new recruits Paul Lucas and Jonathan Gibson, Raj Vij and Brendan Bostock were added to the squad hoping for their first appearances in Outcasts colours. Brendan in fact was making a first appearance since 2002. Indeed, the visitors had 13 players to call on, and Colin stepped aside to assume umpiring duties for the evening and Les replaced Harvey after he had to finish shortly before the completion of Outcasts innings.

Outcasts batted first in clammy conditions, with Jon and Harvey opening. Sadly, neither lasted long, and both were soon joined in the pavilion by Brendan, by which time Outcasts were 8-3. A familiar story was beginning to unfold. However, Chris Truesdale was joined at the crease by Steve Potter and the two went about putting some momentum back into the visitors scoring. Both were well into double figures when Chris was run out going for a sharp second run that turned out to be just too sharp. There followed a sad procession of Outcasts' wickets, with none of the middle and lower order batsmen able to get into double figures.

The innings ended in the final over when Andy was adjudged run out by umpire Wood, a decision that some felt struck an uncomfortable balance between decisiveness and unseemly enthusiasm, and which may well have seriously compromised the umpire's lift to future games. Outcasts were all out for 76, a total that looked well short of being competitive, even on a track that was giving some assistance to the bowlers. The wickets were shared around by Albion bowlers, with Parr getting 3, and Glover and Barlow picking up two apiece, including a stunning left handed caught and bowled by the latter from a fiercely struck drive to dismiss the unlucky Steve Potter.

Albion were always favourites to knock off the runs needed for victory, and so it proved, but not without some hiccoughs along the way. In the end they were indebted to Ian Raby for his 22, and to Steve Glover for an impressive, hard hitting and unbeaten 30 that included five boundaries. Little Jake Raby, 12 years of age, was dismissed first ball, which incurred much wrath from the sidelines, mainly from watching Outcasts team members. They could have given him another chance, for goodness sake!

Chris Truesdale took 3 wickets, and Paul Lucas and Steve Potter chipped in with two apiece. Andy maintained his fine vein of form behind the sticks with no less than three dismissals, and Colin continued on the road to redemption with two catches, having come on as replacement fielder for Les at the start of the 10th over. The threat to attribute his catches to 'sub' in the record books did not go down well!! In the event, Les had to come back as Paul Mooney left the field having tried to stop a bullet of a shot that dislocated his little finger. Fortunately, he was none the worse for wear at the end of the evening.

So at the close, Albion won by three wickets with two overs to spare, leaving Outcasts still searching for their first win of the season. Next up is Reynolds, whom Outcasts entertain at their Winton home on the 27th June.

MOTM: there were no really outstanding contributions from Outcasts' players on this occasion, though Chris, as highest scorer and leading wicket taker, is worth a shout.

Champagne Moment: Chris Truesdale for his impressive, calm, caught and bowled to dismiss Ian Raby, running against the flight of the ball and taking it over his shoulder.
