OUTCASTS GOLF DAY – CHORLTON CUM HARDY GOLF CLUB, 31ST AUGUST 2018
It was a new location for Outcasts’ ninth annual golf day after the closure of our previous two venues. Steve Potter, a member at Chorlton was hoping that the curse of the Outcasts Golf Day doesn’t strike again at his club.
For the second year running, we were blessed with a glorious late summer day as the eight golfers teed off. Regulars Ron Truesdale, Les Cooper, Bob Sproat, Steve Potter and Ted and Patrick Noone were joined by two very welcome newcomers in Jon Gibson and Raj Vij. Jon had only ever played a couple of rounds before, and this was Raj’s first ever game of golf, a brave effort on a demanding course.
The first prize up for grabs was the longest drive on the monster 460 yard par 4 7th hole. The bigger hitters missed the fairway, leaving Bob to take the spoils with a nice drive in the middle of the fairway. Raj had to leave at the half way point for a family commitment, not realising what a marathon event a game of golf can be. The nearest the pin prize was contested on the 13th hole, and was won by Steve Potter, the only one of the players to land on the green!
Back in the clubhouse the scores were added up, and it turned out to be a close run thing. Last year’s winner Les was in fourth place with 20 Stableford points, Bob was third with 21 points, Ron was second with a healthy 30 points, but the winner by a single point was Steve Potter.
The two debutants, Jon and Raj both gained confidence as the round went on, and will hopefully be back for more next year. Thanks to Steve for suggesting the course which proved to be a good choice, if a little challenging for the occasional golfer.
